Tree Felling

Tree felling is a forestry term referring to the process of cutting down a tree. Often made to look easier than it really is, tree felling can be very dangerous. Tree Felling should always be left to professionals. Tree felling is often performed with the use of a chainsaw and safety equipment. Felling just one tree can take a lot of work and planning. Firstly, it is important to be prepared we always begin by developing a plan for how the tree will fall. A tree should be cut so when it falls it does not come into contact with anything else, this includes other trees. When developing a safe plan it is necessary to consider all of the the factors which could affect the felling, such as the slope of the ground, the lean of the tree, and the height of the tree.

There are many different techniques that can be employed for tree felling. Not all trees can be cut in the same direction. Different types of notches may need to be used. Determining how a tree should be cut is often a matter of professional experience and that is something we have a rich history of at Ludlow Tree Company.

Tree Pruning

Trees can require pruning for several reasons such as removing dead, insect-infested or weak limbs that pose a hazard or may lead to further decay. Performing this kind of pruning can prolong the life of a tree and prevent damage to property as well as prevent injuries to passers by.

Another form of pruning that is often required is Formative Pruning the formation of a healthy stem and branch framework in very young trees. Achieved by carefully selecting and removing any diseased wood, congested and rubbing branches and weak branch unions. Correct formative pruning can dramatically reduce the chances of structural weakness and branch failure as the tree matures.

Crown Reduction

Crown reduction is performed to allow the continued conservation of the tree where structural problems might otherwise demand the loss of the tree. Crown Reduction is used to reduce the height and/or spread of the crown of a tree by the removal of the ends of the branches whilst maintaining the trees natural shape as far as possible.

The ends of all branches are reduced, in length, back to suitable growth points (side branches). As a result the entire tree crown is reduced, in size and volume. This procedure can hugely increase the amount of light and space in your garden, it is usually stipulated in terms of a percentage.

Crown Lift

A crown lift increases the gap between ground level and the crown. This is normally achieved by removing the lowest branches of the crown to a specified height. This is a very effective way of increasing the amount of light into your garden or to prevent danger to pedestrians or vehicles which may pass the tree.

Deadwood Removal

The removal of dead or dying branches is usually performed for safety and aesthetics. Larger dead branches can be safely retained (in order to provide habitat for birds and insects) by reducing their length and weight.

Tree Dismantling

Where space is limited or where for safety reasons a tree cannot be felled in one piece, then the tree must be taken down piece by piece. If the area below the tree is clear and free from obstructions cut branches can simply be allowed to fall. When branches are too large or heavy for the climber to hold and throw clear or obstructions prevent their 'free falling', then lowering ropes will be used.

Storm Damage/ Emergency

Trees can be damaged be high winds, snow, ice & other severe weather. Some damage will require immediate attention while others may be dealt with at a later date.
